The British R&B singer Estelle and Denzell Williams co-directed the visual of their latest single “Lights Out” in Australia, a slow groove with romance, flirtation and summer vibes–and the artistic visual matches that perfectly energise. In September Estelle released her fifth album Lovers Rock and “Lights Out” was released on the record together with Tarrus Riley’s two previously released singles “Better” and “Love Like Ours.”
The singer recently met Ebony to discuss how important it is to demonstrate its origins in its latest effort. Estelle, born to her father, was taught a great deal about heritage and ancestors when she grew up in Great Britain. Hearers can listen to their cultural influences on Lovers Rock through a collaboration with dancehall artist Konshens and record producer Maleek Berry from Nigeria.
“It’s everyone who makes the music from the places from which the music came,” said Estelle. “I feel they’re as great and incredible as anyone who’s popular appropriating[ the sounds].”
